DESCRIPTION: Moses Taylor Hospital is a 262-bed private, non-profit hospital located in Scranton, PA. The Dept. of Volunteer Services provides non-paid personnel and service hours to enhance the quality of patient health care. Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP) is an innovative model of healthcare delivery where volunteers are carefully trained to provide supportive interventions at the bedside of elderly patients. The goals are to preserve cognitive and physical function. Volunteers develop a comfort level to initiate therapeutic communication. STUDENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: Students can serve in the following areas: HELP(Hospital Elder Life Program) providing one on one visits, exercise & relaxation techniques. Spanish speaking students may be needed. Observation hours for PT and OT majors are available. TIME COMMITMENT: A minimum of 2 hours per week and a total of 20 hours per semester are required. For service learning it is essential that students contact the hospital early in the semester so that all the necessary screenings can be done. Students must contact the Director to schedule an interview, to complete the application process, and to receive the Hospital Safety Orientation Self-learning packet which must be completed prior to beginning service. *Walking distance from the University of Scranton.
