DESCRIPTION: Hospice services are designed especially to help terminally ill patients and their families face the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual aspects of their lives and the patient's death. Hospice recognizes dying as a normal process and neither hastens nor postpones death. Hospice believes that through appropriate care and support, the person in the last stage of life can live a life full of dignity and free of discomforts. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:Residential Home Health and Hospice Volunteers provide an invaluable service to those who are nearing the end-stage of their lives and their family members. Hospice Volunteers offer support in the following areas: Companionship Respite for caregivers Running errands Shopping Light housekeeping (cleaning, laundry) Meal preparation Transportation Bereavement support Emotional support Assembling mailings and informational packets Writing condolence cards Special projects Hospice Volunteers are fully trained to better support the patient and family members. Volunteers receive training in matters from medical issues to spiritual concerns to psycho-social issues to bereavement. TIME COMMITMENT: 2-3 hours per week TRAINING/ORIENTATION: Volunteers will be trained to learn the various aspects of the hospice interdisciplinary team and the roll of the volunteer. Volunteers will also learn about the various hospice diagnoses. Valid Clearances, TB test and drug screening are required.
