DESCRIPTION: Serving Seniors, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life and care of nursing home, personal care home and isolated older adults in the community through Community transportation services, Volunteer Visitation services, ombudsman/advocacy and guardianship services. STUDENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: Volunteers are needed to assist in the following programs offered to area nursing and personal care home residents through Serving Seniors, Inc. - Friendly one to one visitation, reading to residents, help with group activities, entertainment, assistance with arts/crafts, pet visits, teach "resident rights", computer training and more. FACULTY/STAFF VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: Visitation, Program education (group & individual), demonstrations, Volunteer Ombudsman Services and Advocacy. TIME COMMITMENT: A weekly or regular commitment is asked, a visit of one or two hours. Weekend and evening volunteer hours are available. Hours are flexible. VOLUNTEER TRAINING/AGENCY ORIENTATION: Training and orientation to the nursing/ personal care home setting is provided by Serving Seniors staff and is ongoing. Volunteer work time sheets are completed and sent to the Volunteer Coordinator on a regular monthly basis. "A Sensitivity Workshop" is available to volunteers. *Walking distance from the University of Scranton.
