DESCRIPTION: The Jewish Home of Eastern Pa. is a 173 bed skilled nursing home. It is community oriented and is open to members of all faith groups. It provides: long-term care; nutrition in accordance with Jewish dietary laws under the direction of a registered dietician; personal services and supervision of daily activities; routine medical, dental and nursing care; occupational and physical therapy and rehabilitative services; religious, social, recreational and adult education activities; professional social services to aid the residents with problems of personal adjustment. A 43 bed Alzheimer Unit provides special care by a multi-disciplinary team of trained staff members. The Jewish Home offers a multi-sensory environment using Snoezelen techniques to stimulate the primary senses of touch, taste, sight, sound and smell. Residents of the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Unit enjoy this relaxing environment filled with light strands, visual stimulation and aroma therapy which offers mental and physical relaxation. Jewish Home volunteers truly make a difference. Our thriving volunteer program offers a unique and special way to give back to the community. Volunteering is a great way to enhance the overall well being of our residents. Volunteers are provided with specialized training so that they may better serve our residents. Volunteers from all over the community come to assist residents in activity programs, with meals, or to just sit and visit for a while. DRESS CODE FOR VOLUNTEERS: Students are urged not to wear short shorts, halter tops or any shirt that bares the midriff. STUDENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: Volunteers provide residents with warmth and genuine friendship, whether it be on a one-to-one basis or in a group. Some residents are chronically ill and many others experience loneliness. Areas of need: - Partners in caring (friendly visiting, reading, etc.) - Feeding residents unable to feed themselves (training provided) - Motivating and escorting residents to activities - Escort field trips - Assisting with Bingo - Musical Activities - Playing games with residents - Discussing sports and current events - Conducting or assisting in any scheduled program - Men's Club - Arts and Crafts - Pen-Pals - Helping residents write letters - Share your talents - music, art, dance, crafts - speak russian or yiddish with residents FACULTY/STAFF VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: - Nutrition and the Frail Elderly program - combination of education on how nutrition impacts the frail elderly, the psychosocial aspects of dining, hands on practical experience feeding residents, followed by scheduled feeding of residents. - Therapeutic Communication - combination of education regarding communication with the frail elderly & dementia resident, supervised communication, followed by on hand experience. TIME COMMITMENT: None required. Available 7 days a week.10am-8pm Approximately 1 hour orientation with volunteer coordinator - must make an appointment.
