Description
DESCRIPTION: The Wellness Center houses three peer education programs, which provide U of S students with an opportunity to educate their peers on issues critical to today's college student. All three contribute greatly to the goals of Wellness for the campus as they encourage audience members to look at their intellectual development, and also to reflect upon their own behaviors and knowledge level. Students from all majors are welcome to apply. STUDENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: A.D.A.P.T.: "The Alcohol And Drug Awareness Peer Team", provides presentations on alcohol and other drugs and encourages the audience to make responsible decisions related to their use. In addition, the peer educators also sponsor social and educational programming throughout the year including National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week and Midnight Madness. S.A.R.T.: In addition to their educational presentations and programming, Sexual Assault Response Team peers serve as a referral source for any victims of sexual assault on campus. The peers work in conjunction with faculty and staff SART members who are also trained responding to the needs of rape victims. SART peers also provide special programming such as Sexual Assault Awareness Week and Mock Date Rape Trial presentations. PEACE: After completing the 40 hour Red Cross Certification course for HIV Instructors, the "Peer Education on AIDS in a College Environment" peers educate others through presentations as well as programming such as World AIDS Day and AIDS Awareness Week. The peers strive to educate their fellow students in order to increase knowledge on HIV and AIDS and to reduce their risk of infection through responsible decision-making. FACULTY/STAFF VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: Faculty and staff are needed to serve on committees and as SART members. SART members serve as first contact for any victims of sexual assault that may approach them. Training is provided for interested persons. TIME COMMITMENT: All peer educators are required to attend a 3-day training weekend in order to participate.
