NeighborWorks® Northeastern Pennsylvania (NWNEPA) is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that has worked for the past 30 years to improve the financial stability of families throughout the City of Scranton, Lackawanna County, and northeastern Pennsylvania through providing meaningful and effective homeownership services. Mission NWNEPA’s mission is to increase the financial stability of families and individuals by providing programs and services that create and preserve opportunities for responsible homeownership and affordable housing. History Scranton Neighborhood Housing Services, Inc. (SNHS) was created in the early 1980’s by a group of local bankers and community members who were interested in providing home rehabilitation loans for their neighbors who didn’t have access to tradition financing. After many successful years of providing home rehabilitation services, the organization increased its work with local lending institutions to create a Lenders’ Consortium – a noteworthy partnership which allowed for additional financing products such as first mortgages and closing-cost assistance loans to be provided to the organization’s growing customer base. By 2003, SNHS had added additional homeownership services to its offerings and now provided pre-purchase/budget counseling, homebuyer education and construction management services to its financing work. It also expanded its service area to include all of Lackawanna County, prompting a name change to “Neighborhood Housing Services of Lackawanna County”. In 2008, due to the rising number of homeowners who were having difficulty paying their mortgages as a result of rising unemployment and a downturn in the economy, the organization launched a foreclosure counseling initiative to serve clients throughout northeastern Pennsylvania. Now working under the name “NeighborWorks® Northeastern Pennsylvania”, the organization is addressing homeownership and affordable housing issues throughout the region with a focus on meeting the most challenging issues facing prospective and current homeowners today.
