DESCRIPTION: The Voluntary Action Center mobilizes people and resources to make a difference in our communities. Programs provide easy access to a wide variety of volunteer opportunities to help meet local community needs in non profit organizations throughout Lackawanna County. Opportunities to service include ongoing direct service, service day events, episodic, short term volunteering and boardmembership. Voluntary Action Center also offers agencies and businesses assistance in volunteer management by providing training, consultation, resource library, and recognition opportunities. Voluntary Action Center is a member agency of the United Way and Hands on Network. STUDENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: Volunteer opportunities are varied and include one-to-one and direct volunteering with all ages of people, as well as one-time/special projects that are held throughout the year. Volunteers' interests, skills, and schedules are matched with those agencies/organizations which meet the volunteers' needs, skills and schedule. FACULTY/STAFF VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: (same as above) plus opportunities to sit on committees, councils, and boards of local agencies through the Board Bank. CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY BUREAU: Volunteers are needed to set up appointments for Christmas Bureau 11/13/11/22. Also for client interviews on 11/27-12/8. The Bureau gives gift certificates to income eligible people for the holidays. Must have good interviewing skills. Come into the Community Outreach Office to view schedule of times needed. (between 9am - 3pm). TIME COMMITMENT: Varies based on mutual agreement between the volunteer and the agency he/she is referred to.
